Breast augmentation was the most common cosmetic surgical procedure in 2010, according to the latest data from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). 318,123 procedures were performed, with 62% of patients choosing silicone breast implants. At his Alabama plastic surgery practice, Dr. Grady Core says breast augmentation is also the most popular procedure among his patients, with roughly the same amount choosing silicone.

The latest study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) shows that breast augmentation was the most common procedure in the U. S. in 2010, with 62% of patients choosing silicone breast implants over saline. As a board-certified plastic surgeon in Alabama, Dr. Grady Core says the same is true at his practice. He adds that patients often cite improved aesthetic appearance and a more natural feel as reasons for choosing silicone breast implants. However, he says another added benefit is silicone implants are slightly lighter than saline.

As patients weigh their options when considering breast augmentation in Alabama, Dr. Core stresses the importance of consulting with a board-certified cosmetic plastic surgeon. He says the consultation process is extremely important regardless of the type of procedure begin performed because it ensures the patient and doctor are on the same page as expectations and goals are determined. He adds that when a patient is considering breast augmentation in particular, and trying to determine which type of breast implant will yield the desired results, the consultation becomes even more important to the success of the procedure.

While speculation arose in the mid-90s regarding the safety of silicone implants, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration has validated their safety following 14 years of in-depth research. Dr. Core adds that since that time, a new generation of implants has become available, which can offer patients improved safety and aesthetic quality.

As a majority of Americans now approves of cosmetic enhancement as demonstrated in the ASAPS study, Dr. Core says he believes continued education and innovation with regards to the safety of aesthetic procedures will support further growth in the industry. Regardless of whether his patients choose saline or silicone implants, he adds that breast augmentation is likely to remain one of, if not the most popular form of surgical cosmetic enhancement.

At his Alabama plastic surgery practice, Dr. Grady Core discusses the latest cosmetic enhancement statistics, the basics of minimally invasive procedures, and the latest techniques that offer significant benefits over surgical methods.

According to the most recent statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), nonsurgical cosmetic enhancement techniques accounted for 83% of the total procedures performed in 2010. Dr. Grady Core—a board-certified plastic surgeon in Alabama recognized as an innovator in the field of endoscopic or minimally invasive plastic surgery—recently addressed the growing popularity of nonsurgical procedures, and the need to define patient goals before pursuing any form of cosmetic enhancement.

Because of the range of minimally invasive procedures available, whether his patients are considering breast augmentation or eyelid surgery, Dr. Core stresses the need for patient education as goals and expectations are defined. “You cannot get surgery-quality results with nonsurgical techniques. You can, however, choose minimally invasive surgical techniques, which offer substantial benefits over traditional surgical methods.”

Dr. Core says the explosion of nonsurgical products and techniques can make it difficult for patients to determine the safest and most effective treatment for their aesthetic enhancement goals. One particular area his patients are commonly concerned with is under-eye sagging. He says the traditional procedure can leave bruising, scarring, and an unnatural result. However, with the endoscopic approach he has helped pioneer, scarring and recovery time are greatly reduced.

As patient demands often motivate a surgeon’s drive to implement new procedures, Dr. Core says he encourages patients to be their own advocates by understanding the options available. “Being educated about these advanced options is the first step in achieving the most desirable results.” Once a patient determines their desired outcome, Dr. Core says discussing all available options with an experienced and highly-trained surgeon is essential to a successful procedure.

According to the most recent report from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), 51% of Americans now approve of cosmetic surgery. At his Birmingham plastic surgery practice, Dr. Grady Core discusses the 2010 aesthetic enhancement statistics, and the need for further patient education to continue to improve upon this approval rating. Additionally, he stresses better education can increase the public’s general comfort with cosmetic procedures such as breast augmentation, body contouring, and facelifts.

According to the most recent statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), 9.3 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed in the U. S. in 2010. While Dr. Grady Core, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Birmingham, AL, finds the sheer volume of procedures performed in 2010 impressive, he stresses the 51% approval rating of cosmetic surgery is far more intriguing. As healthcare practices continue to dedicate more resources to forming online communities through social media sites such as Facebook, he says he expects the overall acceptance of procedures such as liposuction, breast augmentation, and breast lifts to continue to climb.

Dr. Core says he finds this data interesting and wonders how social media marketing will impact the aesthetic healthcare industry as a whole. Similar to conferences such as the annual meetings of ASAPS and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Dr. Core says that the appeal of social media lies in the ability to interact between plastic surgeons and patients interested in cosmetic enhancement, and enables these communities to learn more about the latest innovations and techniques in the industry.

Another point of interest within the ASAPS report and growing popularity of social media is the correlation between age-related demographics: patients aged 50 and up accounted for 31% of cosmetic procedures in 2010, which is also the fastest growing demographic on Facebbok. As the two seemingly disparate entities continue to come together, he says he expects the 2011 ASAPS report will find support for cosmetic surgery in the U. S. has continued to expand.
