Breast augmentation, also called breast enlargement, is the most popular cosmetic surgery in the U.S., with 329,000 people having it done in 2006. A breast implant is positioned beneath the breast tissue to create volume and give your breasts a new, fuller contour. The implant can be placed below the chest muscle as well as breast tissue, and this is an option to discuss with Dr. Core. Another item for discussion is what size implant to choose. Implants are not sized like bras – they are referred to in cubic centimeters of volume.
Implants may be filled with either saline solution or silicone gel. Both are very safe and will give excellent results. Most people think the silicone gel implants give a more natural feel and look, but there are advantages and disadvantages to each type, which you can discuss with Dr. Core. Other choices to be made concern the implant’s shape (round or teardrop-shaped), and outside surface (smooth or textured), and where the incisions will be made.
