Breast Augmentation Questions
Birmingham, Alabama
Why should I consider Core Plastic Surgery for my breast augmentation?
Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Grady Core of Core Plastic Surgery is proud to offer a truly minimally invasive breast augmentation procedure that leaves no scar at all on the breast and a less-than-one-inch scar under the arm that fades quickly. For years, Dr. Core has been an innovator and teacher in the field of cosmetic plastic surgery. Surgeons throughout the country have studied Dr. Core’s state-of-the-art techniques and are performing these surgeries in their offices. Dr. Core’s TEAM (transaxillary endoscopic augmentation mammaplasty) technique provides extensive muscular coverage over the breast implant for a much more natural appearance after the implants settle. Dr. Core is known all across the country for his endoscopic surgery techniques. He offers personalized attention and assures you the most experienced surgical hands in the area for endoscopic procedures. That is why you should consider Dr. Core for your breast augmentation. Many patients have had their breast augmentation elsewhere, but they have come to Dr. Core for correction of a botched or poorly performed surgery.
What is the TEAM technique?
TEAM stands for Transaxillary Endoscopic Augmentation Mammoplasty and allows Dr. Core a full and complete view of the surgical site. This view, in turn, allows a much more precise surgical procedure and more precise placement of the implants. Having performed this technique successfully since 1992, no one is more experienced in this technique than Dr. Core, and experience certainly counts in surgical procedures.
What types of breast implants are approved by the FDA?
The FDA has approved four breast implants for marketing in the United States:
- In May 2000, Mentor and Allergan (formerly called Inamed) received approval for saline-filled breast implants. These implants are approved for breast augmentation in women 18 years or older and for breast reconstruction in women of any age.
- In November 2006, the same two companies were approved to market their silicone gel-filled breast implants. These implants were approved for breast augmentation in women ages 22 and older, and for breast reconstruction in women of any age.
With his vast knowledge and experience, Dr. Core will advise you on which option is best for you and will be with you every step of the way.
Can I still get an effective mammogram following breast augmentation surgery?
You can still get an effective mammogram with breast implants. However, the mammogram will need to be performed in a slightly different manner than for people without breast implants. The technician, for example, must take extra films of your breast. You also might need to have the procedure performed using alternate techniques. Most radiology centers know how to perform mammograms in people who have had breast augmentations but you should confirm this prior to having the study done.
How long after breast surgery must I wait to exercise?
Following your breast augmentation surgery, you will not be able to run for about four weeks. If your implant is placed underneath your muscle, you will be able to do certain exercises that isolate your legs and arms—with the exception of bench presses—right away. If your implants are placed above your muscle, the only exercise restrictions are typically jogging and running for four weeks.
Do breast implants have an expiration date, meaning a fixed time when they need to be changed or replaced?
Breast implants do not have an “expiration date.” If your body shape is stable and there are no problems or complications with your implants, there is no set time frame for when they need to be replaced. The only reason they would need to be replaced is if your body changes with age or pregnancy, your tastes change, or you develop problems with the implants.
