Endoscopic Brow Lift

Birmingham, Alabama

Dr. Core is one of the original inventors of the endoscopic brow lift having developed it in the laboratories at the University of Alabama in Birmingham in 1991. The first clinical application of his discovery was performed by himself and Dr. Louis Vasconez in April of 1992 and since then has become a popular procedure worldwide practiced by a wide variety of surgeons. Dr. Core has taught the procedure to hundreds of surgeons around the world over the last 15 years. The reason this procedure was possible was due to the advent of sophisticated cameras and scopes which allowed the development of these minimally invasive techniques which utilized very small incisions in the scalp. Therefore one no longer needs to have long scars running across the top of the scalp in order to perform the old type of technique for open brow lifting. The open technique results in numbness of the scalp and of visible scar in patients with thinning hair. Therefore the endoscopic brow lift has replaced the classical brow forehead lift. This procedure can also be applied to men with receding hair line and balding areas of the scalp since these scars are very small and minimally intrusive.

The procedure takes approximately 45 minutes and is done under general anesthesia. After surgery the patient will notice several small incisions behind the hairline and also above the ear on each side. All the incisions are very small. There are no drains and other than a compression dressing for a few hours after surgery, there are no dressings as well. The procedure can be performed as an outpatient on an outpatient basis with total recovery lasting only a few days. However, there may be some bruising around the lower eyelid area that may last up to two weeks. However, most underlying bruising is gone within two weeks.

During this time the patient should sleep with the head elevated approximately 30-45 degrees. There is minimal discomfort although the patient may experience a slight headache for the first 24-36 hours. Shampoo may be used the following day although the patient should refrain from taking our pulling on any tangled hair since for the first 5-7 days the elevated brows are held into position by sutures underneath which could be pulled free if a significant amount of tension is placed on the scalp.

The procedure can be tailored to patients who generally only need lifting of the outer brows as well as those who have problems with droopiness of the inner brow, frown lines, and the area between the brows, as well as horizontal lines of the forehead. Dr. Core is one of the most experienced surgeons in the world with the endoscopic brow lift being one of the original developments of the technique.
