Laser Skin Resurfacing in Birmingham, AL

Laser skin resurfacing is performed by board-certified plastic surgeon Grady Core, M.D., F.A.C.S., of Core Plastic Surgery to treat skin imperfections on people living in and around Birmingham and Mountain Brook who want to rejuvenate their appearance.

What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser resurfacing is a minimally invasive cosmetic skin treatment that uses laser energy to improve the look of aged skin, acne scars, and other scars.

Benefits of Laser Ski Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing treats several skin imperfections and offers the following benefits:

  • Enhances skin tone
  • Smooths the skin’s complexion
  • Short downtime and recovery
  • Boosts the production of collagen
  • Treats damaged skin without harming healthy tissue

Who is a Good Candidate for Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Anyone with sun damage and acne or acne scarring as well as wrinkles and fine lines is a good candidate for laser skin resurfacing. Dr. Core can evaluate your skin to determine if laser skin resurfacing or another treatment is the best option.

What is Involved in My Laser Skin Resurfacing?

This procedure is performed under anesthesia. It usually takes 30 to 90 minutes to complete. A lubricant is placed on the skin at the end of the procedure. Laser resurfacing is a very effective tool in the improvement of aged skin, acne scars, and other scars. In aged skin, one treatment will have significant effects, rejuvenating the skin. In severely sun damaged and aged skin, sometimes a second treatment will be helpful. In significant acne scars, the procedure is sometimes performed twice. The first operation causes about a 30-50 percent improvement. The second operation causes a 20-30 percent improvement. Unfortunately, there is no way to create a 100 percent elimination of acne scars.

What to Expect After Laser Skin Resurfacing

There is generally very little pain after laser resurfacing. This, however, varies from individual to individual. You must protect the skin from the sun for eight to 12 months using total sun block (sunscreens rated 30 SPF or greater). You should also stay out of direct sun exposure during this time. The skin will have a shade of pink to it for approximately three to five months. This is generally not too bothersome and can be covered by make-up. Please note, however, complications can occur, and these primarily consist of: In five to 10 percent of patients, darkening or brown discoloration will occur requiring bleaching creams. This will generally resolve the discoloration in two to three months. Prolonged redness occurs in three to five percent of patients, and this delays the fading to normal color by about two months.

The First Week

The patient returns to Dr. Core’s office one week after surgery for a follow-up visit. Ointment is to be used for 10-14 days continuously after the day of the procedure.

When Will I See the Results from Laser Skin Resurfacing?

The results take some time to reveal themselves following laser skin resurfacing. Your skin may have a pinkish tone for about three to five months as the new skin fills in and heals. You may cover it with make-up if necessary.
