Breast Lift

A Breast Lift, also called mastopexy, is a cosmetic surgery designed to elevate and enhance the breasts. Mastopexy repositions breasts to look fuller while eliminating any sagging or wrinkling. Over the course of time, it is natural for a woman's breasts to droop and lose their shape. Dr. Grady Core, M.D., F.A.C.S. is a board-certified plastic surgeon who performs breast lifts on women living in Birmingham, Mountain Brook, and the surrounding communities. At Core Plastic Surgery, we provide transformative solutions to address the natural aging process. Women who want their breasts gently boosted to their youthful, perky position should consider a consultation with Dr. Core. We also provide remote consultations, so you can confer with Dr. Core from the comfort of your home computer. No matter where you log on, we want to connect with you.

What is Mastopexy?

It is common for breasts to hang and lose volume due to age, breastfeeding, and after a significant weight loss. This phenomenon is called ptosis. Mastopexy is the surgical remedy for ptosis, reversing the breasts' downward trajectory by lifting and firming them. Every woman's form is unique. All breasts are acclimated differently, and they evolve over time. No two breast lift procedures are exactly alike, but they should all celebrate the natural curves of the patient. The type of mastopexy procedure you need depends on your goals and your anatomy. Your level of ptosis (sagging) will inform Dr. Core regarding which approach works best for your enhancement journey.

Periareolar Mastopexy

If ptosis is mild to moderate, Dr. Core may recommend a subtle lift procedure. The periareolar technique makes a gentle incision around the dark skin encircling the nipple (the areola).[1] The surrounding skin is drawn inward and pulled tighter, smoothing out wrinkles in multiple directions. The incision is then skillfully closed, concealed around the natural ridge of the areola.

Vertical Incision

When ptosis is slightly more pronounced than in the case outlined above, a vertical incision may be the best approach. Dr. Core begins at the areola and then extends a subtle incision downward to the lower pole of the breast. This allows his proper access to the breast tissue and its overlying skin. After removing any excess material, Dr. Core joins the two sides of his vertical incision to form one subtle line.

Anchor Technique

For advanced conditions of sagging, Dr. Core may opt for the anchor method of breast lift. He utilizes the vertical incision already described, then adds horizontal extensions along the breast fold (where the lower pole meets the chest). The incision resembles an anchor shape, hence its name. Dr. Core is able to remove excess skin along several dimensions, bringing holistic improvement to the breasts.

Benefits
of A Breast Lift

Many of the major benefits of mastopexy are immediately obvious. The breasts sit higher on a woman's form and her contours are altered to her specifications. But there are a number of residual benefits that may not be as apparent. Clothes fit more flatteringly when the breasts are firm and perky. The breasts themselves are situated more comfortably on the body. And confidence rises along with the dimensions of the chest.

BENEFITS OF MASTOPEXY

  • Reduces insecurities
  • Removes uncomfortable excess skin
  • Restores the shape and declination of the breasts
  • Empowers patients to envision and realize their best selves

Eligible Candidates

Women who have breastfed or lost a significant amount of weight are often excellent candidates for a breast lift. Age is also a contributing factor to why many individuals seek mastopexy. As some women mature, their breasts may simply give way to gravity over the course of time. It is recommended that women be finished having children and have a healthy attitude and realistic expectations about the results of the procedure. Pregnancy will invariably alter the size and shape of the breasts, so it is advisable to postpone mastopexy until after you are done growing your amazing family. Dr. Core can determine your eligibility for a breast lift during your comprehensive consultation.

Amazing Results

As with any breast enhancement procedure, the results are immediately noticeable. The full results are visible once the swelling, bruising and scarring fade away – usually in several months. The results last for several years, and their endurance is correlated to a healthy lifestyle. Fluctuations in weight may affect the stunning effects of a breast lift. Healthy Recovery

Once the effects of the anesthesia have begun to wear off, you may go home with your appointed caregiver. You should plan on resting at home for about a week before returning to work or daily activities. It is important that you limit your movement to light work without any strenuous exertion or heavy lifting. Please avoid stress and strain for at least a month or until you have the approval of your surgeon. Most of our Birmingham breast lift patient recoveries take about four weeks, during which time the swelling and bruising diminish. The scars from the incisions fade over time and are usually difficult to notice after several months.

Preparation

To prepare for a breast lift, we ask that you get approval from your general physician to ensure you are healthy enough to undergo surgery. We also recommend you have a mammogram if you haven't recently had one. Dr. Core wants to make sure there are no underlying issues with the breasts before proceeding. About two weeks prior to surgery, we suggest you stop smoking and taking any medications or supplements that thin the blood. Proper circulation is essential to a successful surgery and ensuing recovery. Blood thinners may exacerbate the bruising process, so please inform Dr. Core of any supplements that you may be taking. Lastly, it is imperative you assign a caregiver before the date of your breast lift procedure. It is comforting to have someone come to the surgery with you as well as stay with you for the first day following surgery. Also, you are not allowed to operate a motor vehicle while under sedation, so leave the transportation to your trusted caregiver.

Procedure

When you have a breast lift Birmingham Plastic Surgeon Dr. Core typically uses general anesthesia so that you are not conscious throughout the procedure. Depending on the extent of the lift, Dr. Core makes an incision around the areola and possibly down the breast so that excess skin may be removed. The doctor reshapes the breast tissue, lifting it into an upright position. Once the enhancement is complete, Dr. Core sutures his incisions together. The affected area is bandaged and wrapped to protect the incisions and support the newly positioned breasts.

Complementary Procedures

Dr. Core prefers general anesthesia for a breast lift because it is very common for other breast enhancement procedures to be performed during the same surgery. Mastopexy is sometimes combined with other treatments, including breast augmentation and implants. A breast lift improves the shape of your breasts while augmentation adds volume to the chest.
