Breast Enhancement Surgery – What to Expect
Birmingham, Alabama
More women are deciding to get breast enhancement surgery these days than ever before. This is a decision that should not be made lightly or in haste due to many factors. One of the main concerns many women have when they visit a cosmetic surgeon is what to expect.
The first expectation is that your cosmetic surgeon will be someone you can trust to do a good job. Dr. Grady Core’s background in cosmetic surgery is more extensive than many across the country. He has been instrumental in improving many of the common procedures performed today, including breast augmentation. He is one of the inventors of endoscopic cosmetic surgery, and has taught this technique throughout the world since 1992. Dr. Core also puts a premium on patient education so that you will know exactly what will happen during your procedure. He will also answer any questions you may have about breast enhancement during your initial consultation.
Ideal Candidates
- Doing this for yourself
- Physically healthy
- Realistic expectations
- At least 18-years-old
Procedure
There are two types of breast implants: saline and silicone. Both are safe, but there are advantages and disadvantages to each. Dr. Core will be able to help you decide which type is best for you. Silicone breast implants are pre-filled. Saline implants are placed in the implant pocket and then filled.
Your breast augmentation surgery will take one to four hours. Dr. Core will perform the breast augmentation surgery with either a general anesthesia or a local anesthetic. Under general anesthesia you will sleep through the entire procedure. If you decide on a local anesthetic, you will be given a sedative to numb the area, but will be conscious throughout the entire procedure.
Depending on what you and Dr. Core decide beforehand, the type of incision will vary. Breast augmentation can be performed through the areola, inframammary crease, or transaxillary crease. Dr. Core is the only cosmetic surgeon in Alabama whose transaxillary endoscopic augmentation mammoplasty has a truly minimally invasive scar. It’s less than one-inch in length, but is in the armpit and fades quickly. The last way the augmentation may be performed is called trans-umbilical breast augmentation (TUBA), which is done through the navel.
Both transaxillary and TUBA breast augmentation surgery are performed with the use of an endoscope so Dr. Core can see exactly what he’s doing via television screen. Areola and inframammary crease breast augmentation do not require the use of an endoscope.
Implants are placed subglandularly, partially submuscularly, or completely submuscularly. The pocket for the implant will be created above, partially behind or completely behind the pectoral muscle. Once the pocket has been created, Dr. Core will place the implant.
The incision is then closed and bandaged. You will need to wear a gauze bandage for several days, as well as a surgical bra prescribed by Dr. Core. The stitches can be removed in about a week, and bruising and swelling should subside one to two weeks after that. You can return to your normal routine after a few weeks. While your scars may never completely fade, after a couple of months they will significantly lessen.
Dr. Core will monitor you throughout the healing process. If you have any problems or concerns as to how it is going, speak with him immediately.
