Breast Lift Surgery
Birmingham, Alabama
Breast lift or mastopexy is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts. Gravity, pregnancy, and nursing take their toll on a woman's breasts and often the breasts atrophy or shrink as well following childbearing years. Mastopexy can address these concerns and is occasionally done along with breast augmentation.
The best candidates for mastopexy are healthy, emotional stable women who are realistic about what can be accomplished with surgery. The procedure entails leaving scars on the breasts which usually heal well. Like other body contouring procedures, mastopexy involves trading scar for improved contour. The procedure is typically performed as an outpatient and the amount of scarring around the breasts is a function of how much breast lift is needed which is determined by the patient's individual breast anatomy. Complications include bleeding, infection, asymmetry, and raised or widened scars. The type of mastopexy that Dr. Core performs is called a vertical mastopexy due to the fact that the only scar extends from the nipple complex vertically down to the fold under the breast and usually there is no scar extending horizontally in the fold of the breast. A realistically appropriately informed patients are usually very satisfied with this popular procedure.
Augmentation Mastopexy
Augmentation mastopexy is the combination of performing a breast lift with a placement of a breast implant. This is usually performed for the purpose of adding volume to a breast that is not only sagging but also has loss of breast volume. The implant usually goes underneath the muscle and may be either a saline or a silicone implant. This procedure is also very popular and occasionally Dr. Core performs this procedure with an adjustable saline implant allowing the mastopexy incision and scar to heal for 2-3 weeks before inflating the implant during office visits. This postoperatively adjustable implant allows the patient’s flexibility in the size after surgery. Approximately six weeks after surgery the small injection dome that has been placed underneath the skin under the breast is removed with a minor procedure under local anesthesia in the office. Dr. Core has found that this combination of mastopexy with postoperatively adjustable implants allows for the optimum combination of leaving a thin unnoticeable scar in combination with an appropriate volume which is pleasing to the patient.
