"Stem Cell" Facelift?

At our plastic surgery practice, we follow stem cell research closely but remain committed to evidence-based treatments. Recently, plastic surgeons in Italy discovered that fat grafts injected into irradiated tissue can stimulate dramatic healing. As the transferred fat cells cycle out, new cells resembling the surrounding tissue regenerate and help normalize damaged skin.

Some practices now advertise a "stem cell facelift," implying that fat grafts placed in healthy facial tissue automatically convert to stem cells. There is no evidence to support that claim. Fat transfers to the face can be a beautiful adjunct to facelift surgery, but the biology differs from fat placed into radiated tissue.

Because fat contains a small population of stem cells, marketers sometimes label any fat transfer as a stem cell procedure. Patients should understand that true stem cell therapies remain experimental, and more research is needed before these techniques can be accurately promoted for cosmetic use.
