Silicone vs. Saline, Which Implant is Best?

Many patients who visit our plastic surgery practice for breast augmentation have a vision for their results but fewer have a clear understanding of implant materials. Here's how silicone and saline compare so you can make an informed choice.

The two most common forms of breast implants are made of either saline or silicone.

Saline implants have been the primary choice for many years because they can be inserted via endoscopic techniques using small, hidden incisions. Patients appreciate the reliability and peace of mind: if a saline implant leaks, the sterile saltwater is safely absorbed by the body and the deflation is easy to detect.

Silicone implants are popular with patients who want the softest, most natural feel. Silicone gel is cohesive and tends to ripple less under thin tissue. Smaller silicone implants can still be placed endoscopically, but larger sizes may require an inframammary incision. If a silicone implant leaks, the gel typically stays within the capsule, giving you time to see your surgeon for imaging and replacement.
