One of the most common cosmetic surgeries performed in the United States every year is ear surgery known as otoplasty. Otoplasty can be used to correct the shape, size and projection of the ears. It is a surgery that is commonly performed on children but is also available to adults that may not have had their ear appearance corrected during childhood.
Otoplasty can be performed on children as young as four or five years old and can be done in less than two hours in our office. Although there are different approaches to the procedure, the most common one involves reshaping or removing some of the cartilage behind the ear. This pulls the ear back flat against the head. If the ears actually are oversized, they can be reduced and reshaped at the same time.
Since the incision is made on the back of the ear, any scar is faint and easily concealed by the natural creases there.
