Study Shows Cosmetic Surgery Among Seniors Just as Safe as is for Younger Patients

Age is often cited as a reason to postpone cosmetic surgery, but at our plastic surgery practice we remind patients that overall health matters more than a number. Recent research confirms that healthy seniors can enjoy similar safety profiles to younger patients.

"Safety of Cosmetic Procedures in Elderly and Octogenarian Patients," a study led by Max Yezhelyev, M.D., of Vanderbilt University, reviewed CosmetAssure data from May 2008 to May 2013. The complication rate among older patients was 1.94% compared to 1.84% in younger patients -- a statistically insignificant difference.

The findings held even though older patients had a slightly higher average BMI and more cases of diabetes. Interestingly, seniors smoked less than younger patients (3.4% vs. 8.5%), which may contribute to their favorable outcomes.

When looking specifically at octogenarians, the complication rate was 2.2%, still comparable to overall rates. Dr. Yezhelyev shared in Cosmetic Surgery Times that this information helps plastic surgeons counsel patients that age alone should not disqualify them.

The key remains a comprehensive discussion of risks, benefits, and individual health factors. This research was presented at Plastic Surgery The Meeting, the annual scientific meeting of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
