What is Mastopexy?
A breast lift, also called mastopexy, is a cosmetic surgery to lift breasts that sag, repositioning them to look fuller while eliminating any sagging. It is common for breasts to begin to hang and lose volume due to age, breastfeeding, and even a significant weight loss. Mastopexy is sometimes combined with other breast enhancement procedures, including breast augmentation and implants.
Benefits of a Breast Lift
Not only does a breast lift improve the appearance of the breasts, but it also offers the following benefits:
- Restores breast volume
- Improves the shape
- Corrects excess, stretched skin
- Increases self-confidence
Who is a Good Candidate for a Breast Lift?
Women who have breastfed or lost a significant amount of weight are often excellent candidates for a breast lift, as are women whose breasts have simply given way to gravity over the course of time.
It is recommended that women be finished having children and have a healthy attitude and realistic expectation about the results of the procedure.

How Do I Prepare for a Breast Lift?
About two weeks prior to surgery, we suggest you stop smoking and taking any medications or supplements that thin the blood.
To prepare for a breast lift, we ask that you get approval from your general physician to ensure you are healthy enough to undergo surgery. We also recommend you have a mammogram if you haven’t recently, to make sure there are no underlying issues with the breasts. Lastly, it is imperative you have someone come to the surgery with you as well as stay with you for the first day following surgery.
What is Involved with My Breast Lift?
When you have a breast lift, general anesthesia is used so that you are not conscious throughout the procedure. This is typically used since it is very common for other breast enhancement procedures to be performed during the same surgery. Depending on the extent of the lift, an incision is made around the areola and possibly down the breast so that excess skin may be removed. The breast tissue is reshaped, and the breast is lifted into an upright position. Once this is done, the incisions are sewn together, and the area is bandaged and wrapped to protect the incisions and support the newly positioned breasts.
What to Expect After a Breast Lift
Once the effects of the anesthesia have begun to wear off, you may go home with the person who accompanied you.
You should plan on resting at home for about a week before returning to work or daily activities.
It is important that you limit it to light work without any strenuous activities or lifting for at least four weeks or until you have the approval of your surgeon. Most breast lift recoveries take about four weeks, during which time the swelling and bruising diminish. The scars from the incisions fade over time and are usually barely noticeable after several months.
When Will I See Results from My Breast Lift?
As with any breast enhancement procedure, the results are immediately noticeable. The full results are visible once the swelling, bruising and scarring fade away – usually in several months. The results last for years as long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle.
