What Is Liposuction?

At Core Plastic Surgery in Birmingham Liposuction, commonly called "lipo", is a minimally invasive body contouring procedure that removes unwanted fat from specific areas of the body. It is used most often in the upper and lower abdomen as well as the thighs and buttocks, although it may be used in any area of the body with excessive fat including the face, arms, breast, or knees.

Benefits Of Liposuction?

Not only does liposuction remove unwanted fat in specific areas of the body, but Liposuction Patients will also experience the following benefits:

  • Reduces the appearance of cellulite
  • Reveals a more toned physique
  • Improves self-confidence
  • Takes less time to recover compared to other body sculpting procedures

Who Is A Good Candidate For Liposuction?

Anyone with excessive fat in the areas that do not respond to dieting and exercise is the ideal candidate for liposuction. It is important to understand that lipo is not a substitute for diet and exercise. Good candidates are those who have lost a significant amount of weight or simply maintain a healthy lifestyle and still have unwanted pockets of fat that do not respond to their efforts.

What Is Involved With My Liposuction?

Liposuction is an outpatient procedure and typically performed in one of two techniques: tumescent technique and the ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL).

The Tumescent Technique

In certain patients, eight to 10 times as much fat can now be more safely removed with the tumescent technique than what was previously possible using "dry" liposuction alone.

The tumescent technique refers to the infusion of large amounts of physiological salt solution into the fatty tissue to be removed. Dr. Core usually uses a local anesthetic solution as well as adrenaline, which tend to diminish postoperative pain and generally minimizes blood loss during the tumescent liposuction procedure. When the tissues are full of fluid, the fatty tissue is loosened from its surrounding attachments and is more easily removed by suction. This usually allows larger amounts of fat to be extracted with less bleeding.

Ultrasonic Liposuction

Ultrasonic liposuction uses non-invasive, high-frequency ultrasound waves to liquefy the fat prior to removal. By “tuning” the frequency of the non-invasive ultrasound probe, doctors dissolve fatty tissue before the energy affects other tissues and structures. Many doctors feel this non-invasive ultrasound technique is for patients who tend to have loose skin. Ultrasound techniques are also used for corrective surgery in patients who have had previous liposuction and who have persistent areas of irregularity.

Ultrasonic liposuction may yield better results in areas such as the upper inner thigh or the back where the non-invasive ultrasound waves can more easily breakdown the softer fatty tissue. It is also particularly effective in removing excess breast tissue in men (gynecomastia).

Additional Reading

Almost all lipo procedures are performed safely and comfortably under general anesthesia as an outpatient.

A compression garment can be worn for as long as three weeks and is easily hidden under usual work attire.

Some discomfort can be expected from any surgical procedure, and liposuction is no exception. Most people find the discomfort transient and usually return to work within three to five days and normal activity within three weeks. Dr. Core provides patients with a compression garment, which is similar to a girdle. This garment helps your body to smoothly re-drape the extra skin as well as help prevent accumulation of serum or blood under the skin.

And finally, one often asked question: “Will the fat return if I gain weight?” Our bodies only make a certain number of fat cells; therefore, if we remove some of these cells they cannot return. This is not to say one cannot get fat. A 30-pound weight gain will result in generalized obesity, but the predisposition for weight gain in the suctioned areas will be less than before surgery.

Genius RF For Loose Skin

Genius RF is a non-invasive radiofrequency technology, which is passed down through the skin in order to help collagen beneath the skin to contract and tighten the skin above. Thus, the net effect is overall tightening of skin. The technique has been shown to be safe and is FDA approved. It can cause skin contraction in multiple areas of the body, including the legs, abdomen, arms, face, and neck. The sessions are painless and consist of a smooth wand that is passed over the skin.

The patient will feel some warmth during treatment, but it is not uncomfortable. Many times, the contraction can be seen immediately and improves over the next several days. The treatment should be repeated once every seven to 10 days and is safe and effective. We recommend a series of six treatments for maximum benefit.

What To Expect After Liposuction?

You can expect some discomfort following your liposuction, which lasts just a few days. Within about five days, you can return to work if it is light and does not involve anything strenuous., Normal activities may be resumed within three to four weeks. We provide you with a compression garment to wear for up to three weeks to keep you from accumulating excess fluid and provide support to the treated area.

When Will I See The Results From Liposuction?

As you heal, the results begin to reveal themselves. Bruising and swelling take time to fade – sometimes up to a few months. Once the results are fully visible, they will be long lasting if you continue to follow a healthy diet and consistent exercise regimen. While the fat may not return to this area, it can build up in others.
